Before I had kids, finding time to workout wasn’t much of an issue. Now, with two littles, I have to plan in advance what type of workout I’m doing, if I can leave the house to do it, and how to quickly backtrack if I’m needed. I hope you can take something from this to be able to prioritize yourself as well!
Over the last few months, I have been able to keep a decent routine. However, this didn’t happen consistently until James was sleeping a majority of the night – so new mamas, please don’t stress! Your workouts will always be there, this time with your babies will not. Now I understand how cliche that sounds, but it is true. Especially if you are just getting back into working out postpartum.
After I had James, I started with walking – something I had been doing all of my pregnancy. I still make an effort to walk most days, as I also use it as a form of meditation. I’m an early riser, so while my husband gets ready for work, I take our dog for a 2+ mile walk most mornings before my kids wake up. This way, I get some movement in, but it also doubles as some “me time” before my day fully belongs to my kids. If you don’t like to get up early, grab a stroller or baby carrier during the day, and get some movement with your kiddos! It’s a great way to get them out of the house too. I typically listen to podcasts or audiobooks on my walk. Listening to something you enjoy can be that extra motivation you might need. I typically check my podcast app first thing in the morning to get excited for a new episode – this makes the walk much more interesting! Some of my favorite podcasts are The Toast, Well with Arielle Lorre and the Wellness Process. The audiobook I’m currently listening to is The Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand – a favorite summertime author!

Along with walking, I like to get in a quick Pilates or weight training workout 2-3 times a week if possible. James is still on a two nap a day schedule, her first one starting around 9 am. During this time, I try to get in an at home workout and I like to include Noah. He likes to grab my 3 lb weights and mimic whatever I’m doing. This is such a fun way to bond with your kiddo, but it’s also a way to show them the importance of self care. When our kids see us taking care of ourselves, it can instill the same characteristics in them. Working out doesn’t have to look perfect. You don’t need a cute matching set or a fancy Yoga studio to make your workout count. Even on the days I only get in a 15 minute workout, I’m a much better person because of it! Some of the online platforms I have recently been using are Form and Melissa Wood Health. Form has been super helpful with getting me into lifting heavier weights, while I’ve gone back to the MWH app for the last 5 years whenever I need that good lengthening and toning! Even Stella likes to join in every once in a while!

I hope this gives you a few ideas to incorporate fitness into your busy lives. I’d love to hear what tips and tricks you have!
XO,
Kassie
