How To Host For The Holidays

Happy Holidays!! I can’t believe it’s already that time of year again. As amazing as this magical time is, I know it can also be stressful – especially if you are hosting! This Thanksgiving was the second time we hosted for a big holiday. We had 25 people in our home, and while it was a great time, it took a LOT of work. I’ve learned that there are ways to make things easier for you when you host, so I’m excited to share my tips and tricks! I also want to share how fun little details can leave big impressions. If you’re hosting this holiday season, this post is for you!

  1. Have Each Guest Bring A Dish
    • There is no reason that you as the host need to cook every dish. You’re already offering your home and providing the hospitality. I typically send out a mass text to my guests asking everyone to contribute. Make sure each category is covered: appetizers, veggies, main, dessert etc…
  2. Deep Clean Before The Big Day
    • Don’t wait until the day of your party to deep clean. Scrubbing every square inch of your space will be the last thing you’ll want to do on the big day. The deep clean should take place at least two days before your event. That way, you just need to maintain a ‘surface’ clean. Clean all your bathrooms one day and do your dusting and mopping another day. I have a golden retriever and two toddlers, so I’m personally vacuuming daily already 🙂
  3. Disposable Plates And Silverware
    • I know this is controversial and not very eco-friendly, but hosting is really the only time we use disposable plates and silverware. You can get great quality plastic plates on Amazon. These are the ones that we get! You can also put them in the dishwasher if you are against single-use foodware, but don’t want to use your own plates. I like this option because I can spend more time with my loved ones instead of washing dishes.
  4. Create Or Choose A Playlist Beforehand
    • Music is a great addition to a party. You don’t want to be fumbling around on your phone looking for a playlist once your guests have arrived. Spotify has plenty of playlist options to choose from or you can make your own! For holidays, I love the classic Christmas songs, but I like to throw some more upbeat ones in too! My family is also big on football, so if there happens to be a good game on, that’s typically playing in the background. Make sure to put the volume on low or mute though because you don’t want the TV to be the focal point of the party.
  5. Don’t Go Overboard On Decor
    • Tablescapes can be gorgeous, but they can also be overdone. Remember, people need room to eat! I’ve found placing greenery or some variation of a plant down the center of the table really elevates a look. For Christmas, you can add holly and pine cones – you can get these pretty cheap at different stores, or you can go outside and see what you can find in your own backyard! Faux tea lights also add an elegant touch.
    • Chargers are beautiful, but I don’t want to be storing 25+ of them all year round. I bought these last year when we hosted Christmas, and reused them for Thanksgiving this year. It’s gives the same effect!
    • Bows! It’s the tiny details that add the most love to your look. I like to add bows to napkins. They are a great way to elevate the simplest of items. It may be time consuming to tie a bow around each napkin, but people notice and appreciate these things.
  6. Drinks And Drinkware Should Be Easily Accessible
    • I always appreciate easy access to a beverage whether it’s alcoholic or not. Set out your wine, a pitcher of water, or if you’re using coolers, label them! Make sure to provide glasses and any openers needed. Your guests will feel much more comfortable getting their own drink, and it will save you a lot of time during the party.

Being a host can be a lot of fun—it’s your chance to set the tone and create a space that feels just right. At the end of the day, what matters most is sharing this time with the people you love. These tips have helped my family prepare for hosting a party, and I hope they spark some inspiration for your own celebrations. I also hope you find time for yourself during this crazy time. Take a bath, read a book or go shopping! Fill your cup so you can fill others’.

Wishing you and yours a warm, joyful, and safe holiday season!

XO,

Kassie
